The Vespers Office

To Be Observed on the Hour or Half Hour Between 5 and 8 p.m

The Call to Prayer

Come, let us sing to the LORD;* let us shout for joy to the Rock of our salvation. Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving* and raise a loud shout to him with psalms. For the LORD is a great God,* and a great King above all gods. In his hand are the caverns of the earth,* and the heights of the hills are his also. The sea is his, for he made it,* and his hands have molded the dry land.

Psalm 95:1-5

The Request for Presence

May God be merciful to us and bless us,* show us the light of his countenance and come to us.

Psalm 67:1

The Greeting

Exalt yourself above the heavens, O God,* and your glory over all the earth.

Psalm 57:6

The Hymn

Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus

Stand up, stand up, for Jesus, You soldiers of the cross; Lift high His royal banner, it must not suffer loss; From victory unto victory, His army shall He lead, Till every foe is vanquished and Christ is Lord indeed. Stand up, stand up, for Jesus, the trumpet call obey; Forth to the mighty conflict in this His glorious day; You that are His now serve Him against unnumbered foes; Let courage rise with danger, and strength to strength oppose. Stand up, stand up, for Jesus; stand in His strength alone; The arm of flesh will fail you, you dare not trust your own; Put on the gospel armor, and watching unto prayer, When duty calls, or danger, be never wanting there. Stand up, stand up, for Jesus; the strife will not be long; This day, the noise of battle; the next, the victor's song. To valiant hearts triumphant, a crown of life shall be; They with the King of glory shall reign eternally.

The Refrain for the Vespers Lessons

Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion,* which cannot be moved, but stands fast for ever.

Psalm 125:1

The Vespers Psalm

Sing Praises to God, Sing Praises

Clap your hands, all you peoples;* shout to God with a cry of joy. God has gone up with a shout,* the LORD with the sound of the ram's-horn. Sing praises to God, sing praises;* sing praises to our King, sing praises. For God is King of all the earth;* sing praises with all your skill. God reigns over the nations;* God sits upon his holy throne. The nobles of the peoples have gathered together* with the people of the God of Abraham. The rulers of the earth belong to God,* and he is highly exalted.

Psalm 47:1, 5-10

The Refrain

Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion,* which cannot be moved, but stands fast for ever.

The Gloria

Glory be to God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, so it is now and so it shall ever be, world without end. Alleluia. Amen.

The Lord's Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be your Name. May your kingdom come, and your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil; for yours are the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

The Prayer Appointed for the Week

O God, you declare your almighty power chiefly in showing mercy and pity: Grant me the fullness of your grace, that I, running to obtain your promises, may become a partaker of your heavenly treasure; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.†

The Concluding Prayer of the Church

Protect us, Lord, as we stay awake; watch over us as we sleep, that awake we may watch with Christ, and asleep, rest in peace. Amen.
